Historic Accommodations

The White Horse & Griffin offers 10 en-suite guest rooms named after Whitby ships and skippers. Rooms feature flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, and tea/coffee makers. Some rooms include baths with showers, heated towel rails, and courtyard views. April Cottage, a Grade II listed property 10 seconds from the hotel, has 3 bedrooms, a kitchen with gas hob and dishwasher, and a washing machine.

Local Dining Experience

The restaurant serves British classics using seasonal local ingredients. Dishes include perfectly cooked beef in brandy cream and mushroom sauce with chunky chips. A log fire features in the bar and bistro. The wine cellar offers selections by the glass. Dog-friendly dining is available in the bar and lounge from 8am for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Cycling & Fishing Access

Secure storage is available for up to 10 bicycles with on-call mechanic service. The hotel is on Sustrans Route 165, which crosses Route 35 miles west at Hutton Rudby. Salmon and sea trout fishing can be arranged on the River Esk at Egton Estate. Dalby Forest, 17 miles away, offers mountain biking trails for all abilities.

Central Whitby Location

Located on Church Street in Whitby's east side, the hotel is a 10-minute walk from Whitby Abbey. Nearby landmarks include Whalebone Arch (0.5 km), Captain Cook Memorial Museum (0.3 km), and St Hilda's Church (0.5 km). Limited free on-street parking is available on Church Street, with a paid car park 100 yards away (£9 for 24 hours).

Event & Group Services

The private dining room accommodates up to 35 people for weddings, birthdays, and meetings. Exclusive hotel hire is available for up to 25 guests. Services include guided walks, sea fishing trips, and shooting arrangements. The hotel welcomes dogs for a £10 supplement per night and provides facilities for washing and drying wet outdoor gear.

“The building has charm, and the central location is practical for Whitby sightseeing. The pet-friendly policy, extending to dining areas, could be a genuine advantage for some. However, reports of disappointing dining experiences give me pause.”

Review summary
Based on recent reviews
Powered by AI
The White Horse & Griffin enjoys a superb location in the heart of Whitby, making it easy to explore the shops and restaurants. Guests often appreciate the spacious and clean rooms, some even including a living room, alongside the well-regarded breakfast, especially the granola and eggs florentine. While most find the hotel charming, a few guests have noted that some aspects could benefit from refurbishment. Being situated in the old town, it offers a characteristic experience, and the availability of parking, though slightly removed from the immediate area, is a definite plus.
